CANCELLED From Recruiting to Mentoring: Transformative (AASL ESLS) Discussion/Interest group Marriott Marquis San Francisco
Yerba Buena Salon 13-15
Description :

School library staffing around the country currently faces a wide range of challenges, from systems facing a shortage of credentialed candidates to other systems where school library positions have been eliminated. Additionally, licensure requirements vary widely from state to state and impact university preparation and school hiring decisions. As a result, school libraries may be left unstaffed or staffed by paraprofessionals or others unprepared for the challenges facing twenty-first century school libraries. How do we prepare new “leaders to transform teaching and learning” in this context? How and where should we be recruiting these leaders? These are issues facing school library supervisors and university preparation programs, yet they have significant implications for all K-12 education stakeholders concerned with preparing students who are workplace and college ready. Faced with these challenges, school systems and universities are exploring innovative paths to the recruitment, preparation and support of school library staff. In this session a panel of district library supervisors, state leaders, and library school faculty will share perspectives on the issue, strategies to identify and prepare library candidates, and highlight innovative efforts to prepare a new generation of school librarians who will be leaders in the transformation of teaching and learning. The panel of district library supervisors and library school faculty will share perspectives on the issue, strategies to identify and prepare library candidates, and highlight innovative efforts to prepare a new generation of school librarians.

Diversity Goggles: Examining the Literacy Development of Black & Latino Youth from Critical Multicultural Perspectives [$] Forum/Update/Assembly, Preconference/Institute Moscone Convention Center
3007 (W)
Description :

Although libraries can play an important role in helping to ensure that youth have the literacy skills they need to succeed in school and be ready for college or careers, research suggests that Black and Latino youth often feel disconnected from their school and public libraries. This half-day workshop will examine how teen services professionals can better support the literacy development of youth of color through library programs and services. Participants will use “diversity goggles,” provided by the presenters, as a tool to examine librarian perspectives and practices towards Black and Latino youth, with the goal of improving their understanding of how to better meet the needs of these youth . The workshop will feature a panel of YA authors whose work speaks to Black and Latino youth experiences. These authors will not only discuss their work, but will also engage in the broader conversation concerning ways to better support Black and Latino youth through libraries. Authors who will be participating include: Kekla Magoon, Isabel Quintero, and Adam Silvera. This workshop is sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association, with funding from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Facilitated by Dr. Kafi Kumasi and Dr. Sandra Hughes-Hassell.

How Makerspaces and DIY Science Can Promote STEM Learning at Every Age Author Event, Exhibitor session Moscone Convention Center
124 (N)
Description :

Long before atom-smashers and deep-space probes, there were no separate classes of people labeled scientists or inventors. Fundamental breakthroughs in science and technology were made by ordinary people who felt a passion to explore, build, and create with the tools at hand. Today, the economic importance of STEM is greater than ever, and devices like 3D printers and rich sources of scientific understanding online can empower individuals to new success—if they are properly motivated to engage with STEM subjects and if they have access to those resources. The role that libraries can play in making those connections has therefore never been more crucial.

John Rennie, editorial director of MHE’s AccessScience, will lead this panel of Makerspace innovators and leading librarians. They will discuss the best practices for libraries that want to encourage hands-on exploration and curiosity-driven learning of STEM subjects, with case studies from successful programs across a wide range of ages. They will also look at exciting new information resources that can help libraries and their users develop the knowledge and skills to participate effectively in a Maker-friendly world.
