What I Stopped Doing: Improving Services by Giving Things Up Program Moscone Convention Center
133 (N)
Description :

This program will provide several examples of work library staff have stopped doing -- and how it impacts services to teens in their libraries and communities. Each will be placed in the context of the Future of Library Services for and with Teens report and provide examples of how other library staff can identify aspects of their work that can be changed or discontinued. Presenters will talk about the impetus for the change - why was it needed; how the change came about and the impact on that change for teens and library staff.

3:00pm - 4:30pm
ALA Kitchen Table Conversations Discussion/Interest group Marriott Marquis San Francisco
Walnut
Description :

We asked for your feedback, and we got it! ALA is influential and great for networking -- but we can also be too complex, sometimes bureaucratic, and we send a lot of email. Well, we heard you loud and clear, and we are working on it. Help us stay on track. Through a series of “kitchen table conversations” at the 2015 Annual Conference, attendees will gather to dig deeper into the ALA member experience. Topics may include joining and renewing, reducing email “chatter,” and making sure you get the information that matters most to you. You do the talking; we’ll be there to listen, learn, and then act. Please participate in the conversation and help us shape a new ALA together.

130 (N)

Organizers and participants from the student-led 2015 Symposium on Library and Information Science (LIS) Education (lisedsymposium.wordpress.com) will highlight some of the findings from the two-day event, where students from ALA-accredited institutions across the United States came together to critically examine current practices in LIS education programs. We will share and discuss student-perceived areas of success within LIS programs, and identified calls for change as a result of Symposium discussions. Student-developed solutions and recommendations will be proposed for discussion and debate among participants. LIS students, educators, and policy makers are highly encouraged to attend. Student perspectives on the following topics include: Diversity, advising and mentoring, gaps in LIS curriculum: critical theory, technical competencies, administrative transparency, information ethics, reflections on online education, pre-professional experience and opportunities, costs and funding, required courses, career placement, dual degrees and specializations.
