CANCELLED: Conversation Starter: Should Graphic Novels Have Their Own Award? Other Moscone Convention Center
130 (N)
Description :

The panel will discuss the merits and concerns of creating a book award specifically for graphic literature. Topics will include the still-fluid definition of the format, the impact of graphic novels on American readership, criteria for excellence and guidelines for selection, which readers an award would be for, and what awards already exist for the graphic novel format. We’ll be asking some of the hard questions in one conversation: why isn’t there already an award for graphic novels, and, is a separate award for the graphic novel format really needed? Get ready for a diverse array of perspectives from the panel featuring:
- Gene Luen Yang: cartoonist and high school Computer Science teacher, author of Printz Award-winning American Born Chinese (Twitter: @geneluenyang)
- Candice Mack: Senior Librarian, Teen Services, Los Angeles Public Library, former chair of Great Graphic Novels committee (Twitter: @tinylibrarian)
- Dave Roman: cartoonist and Kids’ Comics Revolution! co-founder, author of Astronaut Academy (Twitter: @yaytime)
- Laura Given: K-8 Media Specialist, 2016 Caldecott committee member and chair of Star of the North Picture Book Award (Twitter: @liblaura5)
